Educational Requirements for Appraisal Institute Designations

Are you ready to take your career to the next level? Are you ready to differentiate yourself from all the other state certified appraisers? Obtaining the MAI or SRA designation of the Appraisal Institute will elevate you into the upper echelon of valuation experts. These designations have long been recognized by courts of law, governmental agencies, financial institutions and investors as marks of excellence in the field of real estate valuation and analysis. With an MAI or SRA behind your name, you will be recognized immediately for your knowledge, experience and integrity.

Review the required education below – you may find out that you already have credit for one or more of these Appraisal Institute courses.

Required Standards and Ethics Courses for All Appraisal Institute Associate Members:

15-Hour National USPAP - View Classroom and Online Schedule
7-Hour National USPAP - View Classroom and Online Schedule
Business Practices and Ethics - View Classroom and Online Schedule

Educational Requirements for the MAI Designation

The following Level I Exams are waived by meeting AQB criteria/state general certification or earning certain degrees:

Basic Appraisal Principles - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
Basic Appraisal Procedures - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
General Appraiser Income Approach/Part I (or equivalent) - View Classroom Schedule
General Appraiser Income Approach/Part II (or equivalent) - View Classroom Schedule
General Appraiser Sales Comparison Approach (or equivalent) - View Classroom Schedule
General Appraiser Site Valuation & Cost Approach (or equivalent) - View Classroom Schedule
General Appraiser Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (or equivalent) - View Classroom Schedule
Real Estate, Finance, Statistics and Valuation Modeling - View Classroom Schedule

Credit must be received for one of the following Appraisal Institute course and examination:

Report Writing and Valuation Analysis (course attendance and exam required) - View Classroom Schedule
OR
General Appraiser Report Writing & Case Studies - View Classroom Schedule

Credit must be received for the following Level II examinations or equivalents:

Advanced Income Capitalization - View Classroom Schedule or Challenge Exam Available
Advanced Market Analysis & Highest and Best Use or equivalentView Classroom Schedule or Challenge Exam Available
Advanced Sales Comparison and Cost Approaches - View Classroom Schedule or Challenge Exam Available
Advanced Applications - View Classroom Schedule or Challenge Exam Available

Educational Requirements for the SRA Designation

Unless AQB Criteria for general or residential certification is attained, the following exams are required:
Basic Appraisal Principles - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
Basic Appraisal Procedures - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
Credit must be received for the following Appraisal Institute course and exam:
Advanced Residential Applications and Case Studies/Part I - View Classroom Schedule
Credit must be received for the following Appraisal Institute exams:
Residential Market Analysis and Highest & Best Use - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
Residential Site Valuation and Cost Approach - View Classroom and Online Schedule or Challenge Exam Available
Residential Sales Comparison and Income Approaches - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
Residential Report Writing and Case Studies - View Classroom and Online Schedule or Challenge Exam Available
Real Estate Finance, Statistics, and Valuation Modeling - View Classroom and Online Schedule, or Challenge Exam Available
